Creating Homes for Vets

More than 60,000 U.S. Veterans are homeless today. As the largest service-provider in New England, Veterans Inc. has helped more than 50,000 veterans and their families find homes, jobs and safety since 1991.In Lewiston, Maine, Scattergood Design has created 20 beds for vets at the former St. Joseph’s School with Veteran’s Inc., with occupancy scheduled for spring of 2014.  In New Britain, Connecticut, the City has transferred ownership of a c. 1916, Beaux-Art style commercial and residential building near the center of downtown to Veterans Inc.. Abandoned for 20 years, this handsome brick building remains an important landmark, though window sash are missing, the roof leaks and paint and plaster are peeling.  SD’s concept creates 18 studio apartments grouped around an existing, four-story skylit stair and restores the historic storefronts for offices and a residents’ lounge.  The goal is to realize cost-effective solutions by honoring the building’s original character.
