J. IRWIN MILLER HOUSE CONSERVATION MANAGEMENT PLAN ON-LINE
In 2019, Getty Foundation’s Keeping It Modern program awarded a grant funding preparation of a Conservation Plan for the Miller House and Garden in Columbus, Indiana. Designed in 1953 by Eero Saarinen, Alexander Girard, and Daniel Kiley, the architecture, interiors and landscapes are considered among the most outstanding Modernist ensembles.
Scattergood Design led an outstanding project team for the project, including Randall F. Mason of PennPraxis, Michael C. Henry of Watson Henry Associates, LandCollective, Building Conservation Associates and Newfields museum staff. Work began with a months-long journey through the design process, preserved in the rich records donated with the property by the Miller Family to Newfields, tracing the dreams of J Irwin and Xenia Miller, their impatience with the slow pace of construction and delight as the home and its gardens matured through the years. We spent a week on site, digging into problems while appreciating the wealth of thoughtful detail and the way that spaces and views change from hour to hour.
The conservation strategy for the landmark property extends from the riverbank across the Great Lawn to the interior fittings and finishes. It sets a course for long-term maintenance and capital projects and ensures that the property can be appreciated by diverse audiences for generations to come.
