LITTLE LIBRARY AT THE GIRLS LEADERSHIP CENTER

TGFT staff and girls join the construction crew and architects on the rear porch of the Volunteers House, celebrating almost a year of great teamwork.

Few elementary and high school classrooms in Tanzania have enough textbooks for all the students.  Most children don’t have their own books to study at home.  The “Little Library”—one of many community outreach programs initiated by the Girls Foundation of Tanzania—makes books available for neighborhood children after school.

The existing “Little Library” is a storage shed at TGFT’s existing rented headquarters.  At the new Girls Leadership Center under construction in northwest Arusha, the Little Library will be at least twice as large.  There will be lots of book shelves and space inside and out for children to gather and read.  It’s located just inside the main gate, next to a Sewing Room and Classroom that will serve other TGFT partnerships, including computer and life skills training and Coaches Across Continents.

As the foundations for these buildings were under construction this June, TGFT Executive Director Dr. Estahappy Mariki held a series of gatherings on site to introduce neighbors, parents, educators and local leaders to the project.  More than $6,000 was raised for books, including contributions from the amazing Africa Schoolhouse construction team.
