CRANDALL PUBLIC LIBRARY, Glens Falls, New York

The 1930’s landmark was nearly doubled in size through an addition that meets the main street and simplifies internal circulation and supervision. The contemporary design complements the original Georgian Revival structure, while welcoming patrons. As Principal-in-Charge with Ann Beha Architects, Pamela Hawkes mapped out a campaign of open community forums and press briefings to ensure passage of a $12M bond by three separate towns.  Sustainable features include high-efficiency mechanical systems;

“daylight harvesting” through windows, with light monitors and an automatic control system to adjust lights to compensate only as needed; heat-absorbing roofing materials; recycled, salvaged, and recyclable materials on the new addition; and the use of locally harvested materials throughout.

By all indicators, the newly renovated and expanded Crandall Public Library
has been a big hit. With 230,848 visits in the first half of this year, the library is on pace to double its traffic figure … at its temporary location. Circulation is up 36 percent, and the library has signed up 5,000 new cardholders since reopening at its permanent location in December. ‘We knew that people would love the library,’ said Christine McDonald, the library’s Executive Director.
