INFILL AFFORDABLE HOUSING Portland, Maine
TFH teamed with People’s Regional Opportunity Program to increase the number of affordable housing units in the densest areas of Portland. Zoning restrictions were updated in collaboration with the City to recognize the existing density and character. The narrow Triplex design readily adapts to substandard—typically underutilized and hence affordable—sites. Stacking two townhouse units over a flat gives each unit direct to the street, creating a greater sense of community. The design draws on the region’s early 20th century residential building vocabulary, ensuring their integration into existing neighborhoods. Modular, paneled, and traditional stick frame construction methods were combined to minimize construction time, ensure high quality, and reduce overall costs.
