DORMITORY KIT, Milembe School, Misungwi District, Tanzania
In the winter term of 2022, the first girls moved into the dormitory complex at the Milembe School for Girls in Iteja, Tanzania. It marked the third phase of work that Scattergood has completed with non-profit Africa Schoolhouse in cooperation with the Misungwi District. The self-sufficient dormitory compound includes the first of two dormitories housing 50 girls, plus showers and latrines, a dining pavilion and matron house.
The dorm compound can serve as a prototype for rural school districts throughout Tanzania, enabling them to enhance existing campuses and bring much-needed opportunities for girls online sooner. The designs are suitable for locations with no access to district electricity, water or sewage, incorporating sustainable, easily-obtained materials and systems for rainwater catchment. All components can be brought to the site in a pickup truck and assembled without power tools. Details have been simplified to accommodate basic levels of carpentry and masonry and can be modified to meet local customs and crafts. Film demonstration videos can make key construction steps available via cellphone.
