With 14 studio and 3 one-bedroom apartments, 232 Arch Street in New Britain, CT extends the impact of nonprofit organization Veterans Inc., the largest provider of support services to veterans and their families in New England.

The four-story c. 1916 apartment building, located in New Britain’s historic downtown, had been abandoned for 20 years, with a leaky roof and all windows missing. Scattergood Design’s plans arranged living units around the existing, four-story central stair, using existing bearing walls to minimize work. Historic ground floor storefronts were reinterpreted for a residents’ lounge and counseling offices.  The goal was to realize cost-effective solutions by honoring the building’s original character—accomplished at a renovation cost of about $150 per square foot—and to provide homeless veterans with safe and secure lives.
