Milembe School for Africa Schoolhouse Nearing Completion

Photos fresh off the phone from Kishosha in Tanzania this morning show the laboratory buildings and latrines at Milembe School are nearly finished. The first group of windows were trucked from Bujora last week, and are being installed in Laboratory A. Bamboo screens over fiberglass panels in the clerestory add shading, as well as a reminder of traditional building craft. Weaving reeds around typical welded steel bars provide ventilation at the classroom doors while maintaining visual privacy and security.

The start of landscaping is always a sure sign that completion is near. The team marked locations for low seating walls and tree well on the outdoor veranda and are sourcing pavers in town. Landscape architect Soren Deniord has graciously volunteered design services to finalize details and plant selections for this phase, as well as re-evaluating the master plan now that the first site survey has been completed.
